The term “Dark Horse” first got its use in politics where a candidate will arise from nowhere and claim a nomination or election while the other larger parties are bickering, at a stand still, and cannot come to an agreement. This expression is a great way to look at the comic book publisher, Dark Horse Comics.
Dark Horse Comics was founded in 1986 by Portland, Oregon business owner Mike Richardson. Richardson saw the comic book industry as, "...in danger of crumbling." Due to the poor quality of comics being produced. Richardson used the money he had earned from his comic retail business to launch the company and the first comic that was published was the anthology series, “Dark Horse Presents,” a collection of comic book stories.
The first issue of Dark Horse Presents featured, “Concrete,” which eventually became its own series and earned creator Paul Chadwick an enormous 26 awards in its first two years alone. Another comic to come from the anthology series was Frank Miller’s, “Sin City.”
Dark Horse became known as a place that was generous to their creators and also a place that took risks when it came to the kinds of stories they were telling. This attitude lured many creators to Dark Horse including the before mentioned Paul Chadwick, Frank Miller, Will Eisner, Mike Mignola, Stan Sakai, and Sergio Aragones.
Dark Horse has also become the largest producer of licensed comic books in the world with properties such as Star Wars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Aliens, Predator, and The Terminator. They even launched their own film studio, Dark Horse Entertainment which produced the film, “The Mask,” with Jim Carrey and went on to amass over $343 million dollars, all on an $18 million dollar budget. “The Mask,” was based on a comic book from Dark Horse.
Many other properties from Dark Horse have been and are being made into feature films. “Hellboy,” and “Sin City” are two of the most notable and “Mystery Men” and “Barb Wire” are some of the most notorious. Rumours still abound that “Concrete,” is in production and will some day come to the screen.
Dark Horse has become the third largest publisher of comic books behind DC and Marvel. Dark Horse, under the helm of Mike Richardson continues to prove itself as a contender, innovator, and risk taker in the world of comic books.
From 1993-1996 Dark Horse began to publish superhero comics under their own Comics Greatest Heroes imprint, later renamed Dark Horse Heroes.
Beginning in 1994 Frank Miller and John Byrne created another imprint called Legend, specifically for creator-owned projects. Other creators that joined them were Art Adams, Mike Mignola, Eric Powell, Mike Allred, Paul Chadwick, Dave Gibbons, and Geof Darrow. The Legend imprint ended in 1998.
Dark Horse Manga, publishes many different manga publications, translated from the original Japanese.
From 1999-2002 the Maverick imprint published creator-owned material.
In 2013 Dark Horse formed an original superhero imprint called Project Black Sky.
Dark Horse Comics publishes, and is best known for, many licensed titles as well as creator-owned comics.

January 2013 saw one of the biggest months ever, with the launch of Brian Wood's Star Wars series and the release of what was to be one of the highest-selling books in the history of the company, The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia! Dark Horse Digital expanded beyond in-house offerings with the addition of Dynamite Entertainment titles through the digital comics storefront and associated apps. DHD also created its first branded app for the hit game turned comics series Plants vs. Zombies, which saw record downloads across all of the Dark Horse apps. Dark Horse continued to expand its video game related offerings, with the announcements of both Halo, with creatives from the game, and Tomb Raider, written by comics superstar Gail Simone. Dark Horse expanded its growing line of superhero books, with the introduction of Captain Midnight and Brain Boy, written by rising stars Joshua Williamson and Fred Van Lente, respectively. Additionally, the company resurrected the Agents of Change in the genre-bending Catalyst Comix, written by Joe Casey. Another Dark Horse character appeared as never before in Art Baltazar and Franco's kid-friendly Itty Bitty Hellboy. The latter half of the year saw the announcement of the 2014 return of other popular titles from Dark Horse's publishing history: Aliens, Predator, and Alien vs. Predator, all interconnected, with the addition of Ridley Scott's epic Prometheus! Dark Horse again took home the Eisner and Harvey Awards for Dark Horse Presents.
Dark Horse entered the "Year of the Horse" in 2014 with predictions of the biggest year on record to come, with Serenity: Leaves on the Wind, Tomb Raider, and Greg Rucka's Veil launching in the first three months of the year. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel & Faith came back for another season, and Hellboy turned twenty with one of the most successful promotions in the history of the company in comic shops around the world!
In 2012, Dark Horse reestablished itself as the premier publisher of creator-owned and licensed content by kicking off the year with a New York Times number-one bestseller, Avatar: The Last Airbender, which quickly became a smash hit. Soon after, The Art of Mass Effect followed and swept video-game audiences off their feet. As Dark Horse’s comics continued to grow in print, Dark Horse Digital continued to grow in the consumer market, invading Nook, Kobo, and Kindle tablets, as well as producing a four-star Android app. Dark Horse Deluxe celebrated a record year as well, releasing the beloved Troll dolls back into the public, not to mention keeping fans busy with a series of highly collectible Game of Thrones products. Dark Horse’s creator-owned series saw a significant number of titles launched, including Matt Kindt’s MIND MGMT, Mike Mignola’s Hellboy in Hell, and Michael Avon Oeming’s The Victories. Perhaps the most celebrated launches came from acclaimed author Brian Wood, who began writing Conan the Barbarian along with his own series, The Massive, and finished the year with the announcement that he would be writing a new Star Wars series. Dark Horse Comics also took home five Eisner Awards in 2012, including Best Anthology for Dark Horse Presents.
In 2011, the company celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary in style, with the launch of an all-new proprietary digital-comics app, boasting hundreds of titles for download through both the iTunes store and the Dark Horse Digital storefront at Digital.DarkHorse.com. Later that year, the company beta-tested an android BETA app in the android Marketplace. The latter half of the year saw the launch of three new Dark Horse titles from big names outside of comics with Tom Morello's Orchid, best-selling authors P.C. and Kristin Cast's House of Night, and Guillermo del Toro's The Strain.
